What is moving?

A Zen master was crossing a river in a small boat with one young disciple and one older disciple.

Looking at the distant mountains, the Zen master asked the young monk,

"Is it the boat that's moving? Or is it the mountain?"

The young monk said nothing, but quietly folded his hands toward the Zen master.

The older monk then raised his handkerchief high toward the Zen master.

The Zen master smiled brightly at the two disciples' answers.

무엇이 움직이는가?

만공스님이 제자 혜암과 진성과 함께 작은 배를 타고 강을 건너고 있었다.

저 멀리 산을 바라보던 만공스님이 제자 진성에게 물었다.

"배가 움직이는 것이냐? 아니면 산이 움직이는 것이냐?"

진성은 아무 말도 하지 않고 조용히 합장을 하였다.

그러자, 혜암은 손수건을 꺼내 만공스님을 향해 높이 들어 보였다.

두 제자의 답에 만공스님은 활짝 웃었다.
